Allamanda Jump Start Block of the Month Sampler Quilt Project

Block 11 - Whirlwind (Modern) - 4 patch - 8 pieces
Suggest use 2 contrasting fabrics or use 8 fabrics for scrappy look, 4 light, 4 dark.

Cutting Instructions:  This is the hard part - follow carefully.
1.  Need to make templates first.  Hint - each patch creates a qtr. sq. triangle.
Thus, use magic number - add 1-1/4" to finished 9" block = 10-1/4" cut on both diagonals.
Create paper templates, then trace and cut out of heavy cardboard or good plastic to aide rotary cutting out fabric pieces.
2.  Cut out a 10-1/4" paper block, draw line across both diagonals, cut into 4 pieces.
Long side is outside edge = straight of grain.
Now, lots of numbers, heed warning of the old adage, measure twice, cut once.
3.  Using 1 piece, along long side (outside edge), measure over from right 5-3/4" and mark dot (Check from left side to 5-3/4" mark is 4-1/2").  From right side of outside edge, measure down 4" and mark dot.  (To check, from inside point to 4" dot is 3-3/16".)  Draw line between 5-3/4" dot and 4" dot, cut along this line, triangle made is Template #1.
4.  Using another piece, not leftover from #3 above - along long side (outside edge), measure across from right 5" and mark dot (Check from left side to 5" mark is 5-1/4").  From right side, measure down 3-1/2" and mark dot.  (To check, from inside point to 3-1/2" dot is 3-5/8".)  Draw line between 5" dot and 3-1/2" dot, cut along this line, 4-sided shape made is Template #2.
5.  Using paper templates, trace and cut out cardboard or plastic templates.
6.  Using 2 contrasting fabrics, cut out 4 of Template #1 from Fabric 1, and 4 of Template #2 from Fabric 2.

Construction:  This is the easy part (almost)!  Piece together with 1/4" seams, and taking note of starting points.
1.  Pair template #1 pieces with template #2 pieces, matching up raw edges along inside lines.  Don't try to match up outside raw edges.  8 pieces are now 4 pieces.
2.  Long sides facing outside, match up raw edges of 2 pieces along template #2 sides and sew 1/4" seam.  Do remaining pair.
3.  Now join two halves, matching up center seams to form nice X.
4.  Press carefully during piecing, lots of biased edges in this block.
5.  Square up and give block final press.   This block has a nice twist to it!!

Block 9 - Patch Twist - Set-in Seam - 5 pieces
Block can be made with numerous fabric scenarios, and center block is fussy-cut opportunity.
This block requires set-in seam technique for piecing.

Cutting Instructions:  (You deserve a break this block gives with easy cutting.)
1.  Center block is 3-1/2" square.
2.  Cut 4 rectangles - 3-1/2" x 6-1/2".  Call these #1, #2, #3 and #4.
Here's your chance to be creative with some of those beautiful fabrics we've been seeing in your quilts, i.e., working with color wheel to work some magic pizzazz.

Construction:
1.  Sew #1 rectangle to top side of center square ending about 1/2" to 1" before end of center square.  Creates C1.  Half of rectangle is without seam.
2.  Sew #2 rectangle to left side of C1 piece, matching raw top and bottom edges and sewing seam all the way from beginning to end.  Creates C12
3.  Sew #3 rectangle to bottom side of C12, matching raw edges and sewing all the way from beginning to end.  Creates C123
4.  Sew #4 rectangle to C123, matching beginning raw edges, sew all the way up to top of center square.
5.  Now go back to C1 side and complete seam from #1 rectangle across #4 rectangle to end.  This is called a "set-in seam".  Nothing hard about that!
6.  Square up block and final press.
