Block 7 - Geese in the Air - Half-Square Triangles (HSTs)
Instructions use 3 different fabrics, Fabric #1 is large triangle, Fabric #2 is for "Geese" triangles, and Fabric #3 is for geese background triangles. #2 and #3 should definitely have high contrast.
Fabric #1 - Cut 1 9-7/8" square; cut diagonally once. Opportunity here to "fussy cut" special fabric.
Fabric #2 - Cut 2 3-7/8" squares.
Fabric #3 - Cut 3 3-7/8" squares.
Block 8 - Sawtooth Star - Flying Geese Units
Instructions use 3 different fabrics, Fabric #1 center and corner squares, Fabric #2 large"Geese" unit triangles, and Fabric #3 small "Geese" unit triangles. #2 and #3 need high contrast to each other and to stand out against the squares that make up this very popular, basic quilting block.
Fabric #1 - Cut 1 5-1/2" square - fussy cut??.
Fabric #1 - Cut 4 2-3/4" squares.
Fabric #2 - Cut 1 5-3/4" square; cut on both diagonals.
Fabric #3 - Cut 4 3-1/8" squares, cut each in half diagonally.
Now all you smarties who have done these blocks before or who figure out the construction, go for it! Newbies, no worry, these triangles and square all piece together easily and we'll show you how. In Block 8, HSTs make the center point star sections by forming the Flying Geese units. We'll piece 9 units into 3 sections into the 9-1/2" unfinished block. Remember this very important and basic quilting rule: be consistent in your 1/4" seams. Back to Block 7, the HSTs side go together and large triangle gets added. Review the pressing page to take care with the HSTs biased seams. For Block 7, our beginner BOM quilt uses the traditional method to construct. At the demo, we'll look at a second method using a technique in which you don't cut any triangles. For real!
