Block 4 - Log Cabin - Steep Steps (13 pieces)
This block is comprised of a Center Square with fabric strips sewn around it in sequence. Center square often is red, representing warmth, hearth of home. Light values one side of red square, dark values on other side.
Idea/Suggestion: Fussy-cut center square from favorite fabric.
Cut: (L=light / D=dark)
1 red (or fussy cut) center square 2¾" - (1 piece)
1 rectangle strip ea from light & dark fabrics - (4 pieces)
1-5/8" x 2¾" (2L & 2D) and 1-5/8" x 9-1/2" (5L & 5D)
2 rectangle strips ea from light & dark fabrics - (8 pieces)
1-5/8" x 5" (3La, 3Lb, 3Da, 3Db) and
1-5/8" X 7-1/4" (4La, 4Lb, 4Da, 4Db)
Okay, you guessed it, using ¼" seam allowance, start the sequence… and press to strips. Newbie's, if confusing, please wait for class.
1) Sew 2L and 2D to top & bottom opposite sides of center sq.
2) Sew 3La and 3Da to other opposite sides of center square; then 3Lb and 3Db to top and bottom respective sides.
3) Continue sequence and sew 4La and 4Da on each side, and square up by sewing 4Lb and 4Db to top and bottom.
4) Sew 5L and 5D to their respective light and dark opposite sides to complete construction.
5) Give block final press and square up to 9-1/2".
Block 5 - Ribbon Quilt Block (9 patch) -- A Variation of Friendship Star Block
A quilt made with this block looks like it has a ribbon going through it, in and around the blocks. Traditionally, this block is made with 3 fabrics, one for star, one for "ribbon" and one for corners. Please note (especially Wanda) that this block can turn out very nicely with just two fabrics/colors, use one fabric for both star and corners, and second contrasting (darker/lighter/print) for "ribbon" parts. We did half-square triangles (HST) in Block 1 Churn Dash. Getting the ribbon effect can be tricky though.
Cutting:
Fabric 1/Star - 1 3-1/2" sq, 2 3-7/8" sqs
Fabric 2/Ribbon - 4 3-7/8" sqs
Fabric 3/Corners - 2 3-7/8" sqs
(Do not cut 3-7/8" sqs diagonally yet.)
Construction:
1. RST Pair the 4 Fabric2/Ribbon sqs. with 2 Fabric1/Star sqs and 2 Fabric3/Corner sqs., lighter sq. on top; diagonally draw line across the lighter sqs.
2. Sew 1/4" seam down both sides of diagonal lines on pairs, cut across drawn lines, carefully press to dark, snip doggie ears.
3. (At class, there will be a diagram here to show placement of HST's to get the ribbon effect.) New quilters, best to wait for class. For out-of-town members, check for placement by looking at the block's picture.
