_____________
Block 12 - Roman Stripe - 4 patch - 12 pieces - Three-by-Three (3 stripes/fabrics)
(Called Rail Fence when using 4 fabrics making nine patch - 36 pieces)
Strip sets - sew long rectangle side, then cut pieced strips into squares
Use of fabric repeats create zigzag effect
Press seams towards darks, or press all in one direction.
Cutting:
From 3 fabrics: Cut a strip of fabric 2" wide by 22".
Construction (Strip Sets):
1. Sew the strips together and press all in one direction. Strips sets should measure 5" wide. Sub-cut strip sets into four 5" squares.
2. Place 2 squares together with stripes perpendicular and stitch. Repeat for two remaining squares, reversing direction of stripes.
3. Stitch rectangular units together to complete block; it should measure 9 1/2" square.
Construction (Pieces):
1. Sub-cut three strips into 4 pieces each measuring 2" x 5".
2. Using one from each of 3 fabrics, sew pieces together into four 5" squares, then follow 2&3 above to complete 9 1/2" square.
Block 1 - Churn Dash - 9 patch - 17 pieces
Other names: Hole in Barn Door, Monkey Wrench, Shoofly
Half Square Triangles - HST; opportunity to "Fussy Cut" center square piece
Two high contrast fabrics (i.e., one light, one dark)
Cutting and Pieceing (From both light and dark fabrics):
1. Cut a strip 2" wide by 18" long. Sew strips together and press to dark fabric. Sub cut 4 pieces that measure 3-1/2" square each.
2. Cut 2 squares 3-7/8" to construct a HST. Method 1: Cut in half diagonally, pair up light & dark triangles, carefully sew along long bias sides, press to dark. Better Method 2: Pair up light & dark squares. Draw diagonal line on wrong side of lighter squares. Sew 1/4" away from both sides of drawn line. Cut across drawn line and press to dark. Each pair makes 2 HST's. Method 2 - long bias sides of triangles are contained while sewing and less chance of stretching.
3. Cut a 3-1/2" square for center piece. (Can be fussy cut)
Construction:
Arrange the 9 pieces into 3 rows; sew across rows and then sew rows together.
