  Allamanda Quilters Special Notices

Minutes, April 13, 2010 Meeting
The meeting was called to order by the President, Paula Mooney, at 1:00 p.m.

Secretary's Report - We dispensed with the reading of the minutes from the March 9th meeting since they had previously been sent to everyone via email.

Treasurer's Report - Janice Tingle read the treasurer's report.  The checking account balance on March 9th was $633.63.  Receipts during the month totaled $1,688, which included $1,540 for the retreat, $30 from the Guild for a refund of membership dues, $30 for two new members, and $113 from the 50/50 drawings.  Expenses included $1,475.54 to the Life Enrichment Center for the retreat, $20 to QGOTV for dues, and $20 for refunds to two members for overpayment of Guild dues.  The ending balance on April 13 is $820.46.

The accountant for the Guild told them that chapters do not need to track expenditures of the $250 grant money, so Janice will not be maintaining a separate list of expenses against the $250 grant provided by the QGOTV.

Membership Committee - We had one new member join today, so we currently have 79 members.

Program Committee - There was no committee report at today's meeting, but please see program and class information and opportunities below in the New Business section.

2011 Showcase of Quilts - (January 28-29, 2011)  Janice Bartus will be around for one more month before heading north for the summer.  She reiterated the need for Crystal Light-type containers.  Please bring these in and give them to Janice.  Baskets, cellophane to wrap the baskets and ribbon to tie everything together will be needed in the Fall.  More information will be provided as the date gets closer.
Silent Auction - Each chapter will be asked to donate at least 1 item for every 10 members later this Fall.
Challenge Quilt - The date to participate in the Challenge Quilt has been extended.  Janice has guidelines for the challenge quilt for those who still might be interested.  You will be given a piece of fabric that needs to be included in your quilt that fits the theme of "Village Sunset."  The cost is $5 (which is returned to you when you submit your finished item).  Please contact Janice if you are interested.  jbveggie@comcast.net  or  313-623-5195

Old Business:

1.    The Allamanda Bylaws were discussed.  Two changes were made to the draft version that was sent out previously to all members.  There was a typo regarding the term of officers that was corrected to read that the term will be for "two (2)" years.  The other change was to the number of members that would constitute a quorum for voting purposes.  Since fewer members are available in the summer, it was decided that a safe number would be 20.  Marge Hopkins moved that the number be changed to 20, and the motion was seconded by Barb Dunn.  The motion carried, and the Bylaws have been changed.  If we find ourselves in a situation where we do not have at least 20 members present when something needs to be voted upon, we will conduct the vote through email notification.

2.    Jump Start Quilt - Just a reminder to all those who will be participating in Micki's sampler workshop.  The classes start next week!  If you plan to participate and have not been communicating with Micki regarding what you need to prepare prior to the class, please contact Micki as soon as you can.   Maccumbee313@comcast.net  or  350-6853

New Business:

1.    Class Opportunities -
a.    Several classes were announced at last Tuesday's Guild meeting.  They will be held at the Methodist church.  In May, Mary Shara will be teaching beginning machine appliqué.  Each Tuesday in June, Beth Bender will be teaching a beginning quilting class similar to the Jump Start quilt that Micki is already teaching for our chapter.  In July, Dale Angione will be teaching a "snippets" class.  Paula explained what snippets are, but I'm not sure I can do it justice here.  It is a technique where you cut fabric into small pieces (snippets) and then glue them back together to create a design, such as a flower.  The example Dale displayed at the Guild meeting was of a wall hanging with a large vase with flowers made using the snippet method.  She recreated the actual flowers in the border of the wall hanging using the snippet technique.  Paula assured us that if we, as a chapter, are interested in Mary or Dale's classes, she could arrange for them to come to one of our meetings to teach.

b.    Paula announced that Pat Nagle (Eleanor Burns' sister) would be presenting a trunk show and introducing the 2 new Quilt In A Day books at the Quilting Sisters Guild meeting on Thursday morning at 9:00.  Any of our members would be able to attend as a guest.

c.    Quilting Sisters in Leesburg is hosting Linda Cantrell for a class on May 5 entitled Self Portrait.  The cost of the class is $30.  Please contact Paula if you are interested.  plmooney@aol.com  or  750-8301  Linda will present a program at The Villages Guild meeting on May 4, but she will not be holding any classes in The Villages.

d.    Paula is willing to arrange for Joan Shay to teach her butterfly "Petal Play" class next fall or winter to our chapter if there is enough interest.  The cost would probably be around $25.  Joan presented her petal play quilts using the heat 'n bond technique at a recent Guild meeting.  The results are stunning, and this would be a great opportunity for us.  Please contact Paula if you are interested.  plmooney@aol.com  or  750-8301

e.    Future opportunities / dates to mark on your calendar:

i.    Nancy Chong will be teaching a class in The Villages on November 16, 2010 and providing a lecture and trunk show that evening at the Hacienda Center.  This is not the normal Guild meeting day, which is why the location is different.
ii.    George Siciliano and his wife, Virginia, create beautiful foundation-pieced miniature quilts based on a log cabin pattern, and they have several hanging in the museum in Paducah.  George is the scheduled presenter at the October 2011 Guild meeting.  (Yes… I really meant 2011 !!)  If you'd like to see some of his work, here's the website link.  www.georgesiciliano.com

2.    Just a reminder to all members - Remember to show your membership card when shopping at Joanne's to receive a discount on your purchase!  Yea!

3.    Several members brought items for show-and-tell, and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the beautiful items and the creativity of our members!

The meeting was adjourned at 2:05 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Cathy Barlow
