Allamanda Quilters Special Notices
Minutes, May 10, 2011 Meeting
The meeting was called to order by the Vice President, Sharon Musch, at 1:05 p.m.
Secretary’s Report – We dispensed with the reading of the minutes since they were previously distributed to the members via email. A printed copy of the minutes is available for review at each meeting if anyone is interested.
Treasurer’s Report – The checking account balance on April 12th was $2,440.31. Receipts during the month totaled $80.00, and expenses for the month totaled $38.00. The ending balance on May 10th is $2,482.31.
Membership Committee – We had 3 new members join over the last month, and we currently have 74 members. The updated roster will be distributed monthly with the meeting minutes.
Program Committee – Sharon Musch reminded members about the recent email that included details about upcoming Guild classes. Dale Angione will be teaching a bargello class on May 19th. On September 8th there will be a workshop on using texture magic and making a table runner. Marianne Williamson will be teaching a “Light and Fabric Art” workshop on October 5th. Mark Sherman will be teaching “Machine Trapunto for the Timid Quilter” on February 8, 2012. Please check the Guild website (www.qgotv.org) regularly to get the latest information regarding classes. If you are interested in attending any of these classes, please contact Sharon at sharonmusch@comcast.net or see her at a meeting to register.
In addition to the Guild classes listed above, Dale Angione will be teaching a Stack ‘N Whack class for Allamanda members next Tuesday, May 17th. The cost is $10, and there are still 4 openings available. You must register with Sharon if you are interested.
2013 Showcase of Quilts – At the May Guild meeting, Seabreeze presented their approach to making the donation quilt for the Showcase. They have asked that each chapter donate 12 batik fat quarters in Florida colors (light to medium pink, blue, and purple). They will coordinate all the fat quarters with a background that they will provide. Seabreeze will cut the fabric into pieces and provide 3-4 packets to each chapter, which will be responsible for sewing the 3-4 blocks and returning them to Seabreeze. They will assemble the quilt top, arrange for longarm quilting, and bind the quilt. Once the quilt is finished, it will be shown at a variety of venues (i.e., events at the Squares or local quilt shops) in order to sell tickets. Since the fat quarters were due so quickly (May 17th), we discussed the best way to accommodate the deadline. Marlene Jensch moved that we use funds in our treasury to purchase fat quarters in the requested colors, and Marilyn Paluszak seconded the motion. The motion carried, and Heather Farnell volunteered to shop for the fat quarters. She will bring them to our chapter meeting on the 17th, and Marilyn will take them to the Board meeting that meets later in the afternoon.
Community Service – We had one member (Heather Farnell) donate a laptop quilt this past month. Thanks, Heather!
Old Business:
1. June Guild Meeting – Allamanda will be the host chapter for the June Guild meeting. Greeters at the front table will be Jo Loder, Sally Sonnichsen, Ellen Damron, and Barbara Dunn. Sharon Hannahs will distribute raffle tickets to members who arrive wearing a name tag. Dee Dean and Pat Smith will sell 50/50 tickets and select winners at the end of the meeting. Jo and Sally also agreed to hold the show-and-tell quilts while the owner provides a brief description or explanation of their quilt. Sharon Musch has all the supplies, and she will meet everyone at Laurel Manor on June 7th at 6 p.m.
2. Retreat – Monique shared that we currently have 14 members registered for the retreat to be held on February 21-23, 2012 at the Life Enrichment Center in Fruitland Park. If you are planning on attending the retreat, please contact her (billfoley@bellsouth.net) for a registration form. A deposit of $50 will hold your spot! This is a great event, and if there is any way you can make it, you should try! There is good food and plenty of time for sewing and getting to know your fellow quilters a bit better!
3. Group Email Address – Cathy Barlow encouraged members to exercise caution when responding to emails that they’ve received from the group email address. When you hit the “reply” button to a message from the group email address, the reply goes to the entire group. After hitting the “reply” button, you need to delete the group email address and respond to the appropriate person (or people) by filling in their specific email addresses. Please take an extra moment when responding to an email to determine whether or not the entire group needs to see your reply. Many members are frustrated by having their Inboxes cluttered with emails that don’t pertain to them.
4. Website – Marilyn P. mentioned that the Links page on the Guild web site (www.qgotv.org) is now available. It is member driven, so if you have a link that you feel others would find beneficial, please send that information to Marilyn. The tribute to winners at the Showcase 2011 is still in progress.
New Business:
1. Christmas Lunch – Dee Dean asked the group to determine the date for the lunch so that planning can begin. After a bit of discussion, Pat Smith moved that we hold the meeting on December 6th. Monique Foley seconded the motion. The motion carried. Anyone interested in being on Dee’s committee to host the luncheon should contact her as soon as possible at 2ddean@comcast.net.
2. Marilyn informed the group that a committee to review and edit the Guild By-laws was created at the April Board meeting. Beth Bender, Alice Means, Marilyn, and Micki are on the committee. The main reason for changing the By-laws is to create flexibility for Guild meeting times. Starting earlier in the evening, or perhaps having an occasional afternoon meeting, might encourage more members to attend or allow us to be more considerate of speaker preferences. Once the By-laws are changed and approved by the Board, they will be sent to the membership for review and approval through a vote.
Several beautiful items were shared with the group during the show-and-tell time. Check out the pictures when they’re up on the website! We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the creativity of our members!
The meeting was adjourned at 2:05 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Cathy Barlow
